BUJINKAN MIDWEST TAIKAI
EPISODE 17
AUGUST 1-3, 2025
ANN ARBOR, MI
THEME
This year’s Taikai theme, 奇本八宝 (“ki hon happō”, 8 Mysterious Treasures), is inspired by a clever wordplay from Hatsumi-Soke, reflecting both the teachings of the Bujinkan and the hidden depth of our tradition. The phrase is a twist on the concept of 基本八方 (“kihon happō”, 8 Fundamental Ways), which refers to the essential principles of movement and strategy.
The “8 Treasures” represents the core teachings as well as the untold knowledge, and the wisdom that each practitioner uncovers through practice and understanding. These “treasures” are not merely techniques, but insights that touch on the philosophical aspects of our art.
